The University of North Texas

The University of North Texas (UNT) offers a rich, full campus life for mean green student-athletes. The University is one of the largest universities in the nation, has more than 35,000 students, and is located in the city of Denton that has a population of more than 135.000.

Denton is located some 30 minutes north of Fort Worth and Dallas and has often been ranked as one of the Best Small Towns in America by USA TODAY.

The Univesity of North Texas is historically recognized as a great education, art, and music school and the school continues that rich tradition. Additionally, North Texas has increased its influence in sciences, research, business, and engineering.

Recently, the school built an almost 90,000-sq ft Life Sciences building which includes an over 20,000-sq ft research lab and a 180,000-sq ft Business Leadership Education Center. See also this article about Teaching and Leadership. NTU offers more than 100 majors.

The school has a beautifully landscaped 900-acre campus that features numerous trees and the most beautiful architecture that, over the years, has drawn quite a few film crews to this fantastic Denton location to shoot television shows, commercials, and movies. The school offers several Teaching Programs and all students will have to write their Philosophy for Teaching.

Activities

North Texas boasts over 300 student organizations that include more than 30 fraternities and sororities.  and fraternities. Not so long ago, the school’s University Union underwent a major expansion and renovation, Over the years, the Union has hosted several art exhibits, film festivals, concerts, and guest lectures performed by renowned artists, writers, and other cultural figures supported by the friendly people from Denton and all across northern Texas. Additionally, the Union offers pool and table tennis at UNT’s Union Syndicate.

The school’s almost 140,000-sq ft Pohl Recreation Center features a wide range of workout and fitness equipment and the school also offers an outdoor pursuits program as well as many recreational sports programs. UNT has club teams in ice hockey, baseball, cycling, bowling, dodgeball, soccer, indoor soccer, fencing, in-line hockey, lacrosse, ultimate disc, rugby, volleyball, running, paintball, sailing, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, swimming, wrestling, and wakeboarding. Dallas isn’t far away, and many students take a few days off in early October to visit the world’s largest State Fair in Dallas that draws in over three million visitors every year.

Music

North Texas is not located in one of the five biggest cities in Texas but it is definitely one of the top music schools in the world, and as such is a mecca for student and guest musicians who perform in clubs and festivals throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It boasts one of the great concert halls in the Murchison Performing Arts Center and its centerpiece, the Winspear Concert Hall.

Jazz is an integral part of North Texas, which is renowned for its jazz program. North Texas lab bands are among the greatest student bands in the world, headlined by the One O’Clock Lab Band which has received multiple Grammy nominations and is the first and only student band in the world to be nominated by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The campus radio station, KNTU 88.1 FM, plays this uniquely American form of music.

Among the guest musicians who have performed and/or lectured at North Texas are Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Harry Connick, Jr., Wynton Marsalis, and Tom Scott. North Texas alumni include Don Henley, Norah Jones, Eli Young Band, Sara Hickman, Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Lyle Mays, Roy Orbison, Emily Pulley, Patricia Racette, and the Grammy-winning band Brave Combo. Famous is Dave Brubeck’s concert at UNT’s Winspear Concert Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Though Denton isn’t a big city, even this sort of performances are big-time events just like everything seems to be bigger in Texas,

Housing and Dining

North Texas’s housing has thirteen dorms, including several newer halls, residences for new students or for upperclassmen, and residences for specific academic communities such as music students, honors program students, and athletes. There are also ample housing opportunities just off campus with easy access to classrooms.

There are six dining halls on campus, including the nationally recognized health-conscious Mean Greens vegetarian cafeteria. In these days of obesity and eating disorders caused by wrong food, a truly welcome change. North Texas has numerous other dining options on campus, including several restaurants in the University Union and at Discovery Park, and the Cyber Cafe at Willis Library. There are also a wide variety of restaurants near campus.

Sports

But the college experience is incomplete without sports, and North Texas has dramatically upgraded its facilities in the past decade, including Lovelace Stadium for softball, Mean Green Soccer Stadium, the North Texas Volleyball Center, Waranch Tennis Complex, and the recently-completed Apogee Stadium football facility, designed and built by the same people responsible for the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

The Super Pit, the venue for North Texas men’s and women’s basketball, is one of the finest facilities in the southwest and has twice hosted the NCAA Basketball Tournament. On the horizon, North Texas has plans to build a new track and field facility and a baseball stadium.
