In my classroom, I use the TIME TO TEACH discipline model.
TIME TO TEACH is more than a discipline approach; it teaches students
how and why they are to develop appropriate behaviors for
our classroom. When all students are actively engaged in learning,
there is little time for them to be a disruption in the classroom.
As stated in Time To Teach: Empowerment & Excellence in Every Classroom,
"at the foundation of Time To Teach, is the notion of 'teach-to's'
- those behaviors and routines teachers must teach every child
in order for his or her classroom to run smoothly."

The first couple of weeks of school we will be focusing on the
"teach-to's" that we will be using from Day 1 until the last day of school.
Every classroom activity that we will be doing on a day to day
basis will be "modeled" by the teacher. This includes such common
activities as "how to sharpen a pencil," "how to put up your backpack,"
and "how to walk with a bubble and a grip on the sidewalk."
Every single activity that we do in our class will be modeled
and modeled and remodeled in those first few weeks.
All students will learn exactly what type of behavior I will expect
to see from them daily.

As we model these behaviors, we will be making charts to hang up
in our classroom, as visual reminders for what acceptable behavior
"looks like" and "sounds like". These charts will provide
a visual reminder for the students to remember accepted
classroom and campus-wide behavior.

After a period of a couple of weeks, when we have modeled and
practiced all of our expected behaviors, I will then hold every student
accountable for their actions while they are on the Trout campus.
If a student does not behave in an acceptable manner he or she will be
sent to an area of the room called REFOCUS,
where they will be required to sit quietly and fill out a REFOCUS NOTE.
This note is NOT a Discipline Note; it is simply a note letting you know
that your child had difficulty in a particular area. This note comes home
and is signed and returned the following day.

If a student has a REFOCUS NOTE sent twice for the same
problem, that student will then receive a red Discipline Note from me.
If the same behavior happens a third time, it will result in a
Parent Conference and/or visit to Mrs. Compton's office.
Every REFOCUS NOTE sent home results in the loss of a conduct point.
All students begin each 9 Weeks with a 100 in Conduct;
students with a 90 or above in Conduct receive a special treat
at the end of the 9 Weeks.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at school at 639-3274 or
email me at dburran@lufkinisd.org. I have great expectations for
the students in my classroom, and I am looking forward to
working with you to achieve this goal this school year.
